The Jesse James Getaway self-guided day tour is named in honor of the famous outlaw, Jesse James, who along with the James Gang robbed a train at Gad’s Hill, Missouri in 1874. They got about a 60-mile head start and headed west on some fast horses and got away quickly running along the beautiful creeks, over the hills and through the woods to Maggard’s Cabin on the Current River.
Awesome A Highway and its Sinking Creek crossings and Logan Creek Valley are a likely route for this roughshod band to further elude the persistent posse. Caution on A Highway is advised because there are a couple of very sharp and unbanked curves that offer a touch of peril.
History abounds on this backroad adventure with Aker’s Ferry, the Old Mill at Summersville and Alley Spring and Grist Mill (the state’s most picturesque spot) including the footbridge across the beautiful Jack’s Fork River, as well as a scenic overlook just before you get there.
Directions: Depart from Eminence on HWY 106 east 20 miles to HWY B. Turn left and it will take you mainly north for 14 miles. HWY B ends at HWY 72 where you will take a left for 9 miles to the town of Bunker.
Turn left on HWY A and get ready for a wild ride for 16 miles. It dead ends at HWY 19 where you will take a right for 5 miles and then a left on HWY K for 6 miles to Aker’s Ferry which will take you across the upper Current River, old style, for a $4 per bike fee.
From there you take HWY K south for 17 miles to HWY 17 where you take a left for 1 mile and then another left off HWY 106 for 15 miles and stop and visit Alley Spring (this is a must see Ozark gem). After Alley go left (east) on HWY 106 for 5 miles to Eminence.
